We can’t all be Derek Jeter hearing the roar of the crowd as he earns an RBI to win the game or Jennifer Lawrence accepting rave reviews for her performance. We can’t all be Lady Gaga living for the applause.
But, let’s face it. We could all use a little fanfare in our lives. I know being humble is a desirable trait. But, I also know it feels good to get a compliment. I don’t think we receive or give as many compliments as we should.
Think about it. When did you last pay someone a real compliment? I don’t mean saying things like, “nice shirt” or ” I like your hair”. Even though it feels good to hear those comments, and it’s a great start, I’m talking about a giving a meaningful compliment that shows someone you have noticed the good qualities that they possess.
Tell someone you admire their patience, kindness, intelligence, strength, faith, quick thinking or ready smile. Compliment their thoughtfulness, caring, advocacy, helpfulness, persistence, sportsmanship or confidence. You get the idea! To make it even more meaningful, back your compliment up with an example.
The more real compliments we give, the easier it becomes. We just need to make a conscious effort. So, let’s look for opportunities to applaud someone’s accomplishments, to praise someone’s behavior or acknowledge someone’s effort.
Today, let’s make it a point to say “Hurrah!”
