The Red Door Dream-Part Two

The Red Door Dream-Part Two (Dark Side Thursday)

The red door opens.

I hold my breath, afraid to exhale, afraid to be heard. Air pushes through my pursed lips. My breaths are shallow. Loud ringing in my ears intensifies. As my knees buckle, I reach toward the door frame to catch my fall.

It looks dark inside. I don’t want to go in. I don’t think I want to go in. I think I have to go in. I go in.

The door closes behind me. My eyes strain to adjust to the lack of light. An amber glow on the far wall gives me little respite from the darkness. It fades to black.

I stand still and try to think. Why did I come inside? I want to leave. Holding my arms out to feel for obstacles, I turn around, reaching for the door. It should be right here. Where is it? I keep turning, round and round, in a frantic spin. Or, is it the room that is spinning? I have lost my bearings. Dizzy, I fall to the floor.

I close my eyes against the darkness. Raising my hand to my face to brace against waves of nausea, I make myself take deep breaths. In through the nose, out through the mouth. In through the nose, out through the mouth.

I open my eyes. At the end of a dark hallway, light shines under a door.
