By now, many of you know how much I love my little backyard birds. So, I was worried when I heard lots of bird sounds and saw this big hawk high up in a tree near my yard. I fear for the safety of the little song birds when predators are around. I have only seen a hawk one other time, and when I did, I had the misfortune to see it soar by holding his prey. I know it is a natural part of wildlife, but I don’t like to see it.
This is a Cooper’s hawk. He is fierce. He is magnificent. These hawks feed on small birds and mammals that they capture in surprise attacks. According to my Sibley field guide, they are 16.5 inches tall with a wing span of 31 inches and weigh 1 pound. They can be found year round in my area but are uncommon to see.
My hands were unsteady, but I managed to capture some shots of this large bird as he patiently surveyed his surroundings. I went back inside before I had to witness any action. The bird sounds settled, so he may have just flown away. At least that’s what I like to think.
