Check out these brown-headed cowbirds! I wasn’t sure what they were when I saw them perched on my chimney a few days ago! I already knew a few facts about the birds but I didn’t know what they looked like. The brown color of their heads seems to match the sepia color of JNW’s Color Your World photo challenge today!
Cowbirds never build their own nests. Mother cowbirds lay their eggs in other bird’s nest where they are then raised by the type of mother bird that built the nest! Even tiny birds will take care of the much larger baby cowbirds.
The birds pictured here seem to be two adult males, just hanging out, taking in a bird’s eye view of the neighborhood. Maybe they are brothers that were raised by different mothers!
