Red Hat-Pileated Woodpecker

Pileated Woodpecker

Pileated Woodpecker

LOOK! Finally, the large pileated woodpecker flew through my yard. I saw one last year but wasn’t ready with my camera. Tonight, I was standing on my back porch, camera in hand, when I heard a close, loud bird call! There she was, the pileated woodpecker. She landed in a tree and I managed to take this picture.

I walked into my yard to try to get a better picture, and it flew right toward me and my dogwood tree. Seeing me, it swerved away. My heart was beating fast and I thought I lost her. But, she landed on a tree stump in my neighbor’s yard. She stayed for a long time and I took more pictures before she flew away, calling loudly!

I sure hope she comes back. It was really exhilarating to be so close to the action.

I am posting this for my May bird series celebrating the beauty of my backyard birds. For more bird pictures, click on the birds header at the top of my page.

I will also add this to Hugh’s weekly photo challenge with the theme of hats since my woodpecker is certainly flaunting its red crest! Thanks for letting me stretch the theme.
