The view from this overlook on Mill Mountain is superb, even when haze settles in the valley. You can still admire the beautiful blue mountains and the city landmarks below. From a distance, the view is framed by a grand tree, creating a mix of sunlight and shadows near the deck. I can feel the warmth of the day just by looking at the scene!
Having a free hour one afternoon this week, I felt compelled to look for a place where I might capture a view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
I live in the Roanoke Valley which is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Nearly every main road seems to have surrounding views of these mountains. My eyes seem trained to block out the buildings and power lines that interfere with a pristine view and focus on the gorgeous blue of the mountains against the sky.
Having time and distance restraints, I settled on a nearby location and scouted the area for open views. The sun was shining directly in my eyes as I took this photo, making it difficult to frame the view using my i phone 5s.
I did need to crop the photo to eliminate a sun glare. I also slightly tweaked the coolness and clarity of the picture using the camera + app.
I hope this photo of the beautiful mountains, showcased against the partly clouded afternoon sky, will give you all an idea of the landscape of my city.

The landmark near and dear to my heart is The Mill Mountain Star. Also called the Roanoke Star, it is the world’s largest illuminated, freestanding man-made star! The Star is 88.5 feet in height and weighs 10,000 pounds. It was constructed in 1949 at the top of Mill Mountain and Roanoke was nicknamed “The Star City of the South.”
I love the bright neon star that brightens the sky in my hometown. I have gazed fondly on it in the distance since I was a child. It is a comforting sight to me that means home.
The Star sits 1045 feet above the city of Roanoke, Virginia. At the base of the Star, there is an overlook of the beautiful Roanoke Valley and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. You can enjoy the view of both natural scenery and the landmark Star!
