This is my twelfth 2017 post for year three of Cardinal Guzman’s photo challenge, The Changing Seasons. You can post a photo gallery (V1) or a single photo (V2) that showcases your view of the month. You can check out the Cardinal’s page for the general challenge rules and see his photo gallery. His photos are fantastic! Like last year, I have added a haiku along with my single V2 photo each month. Even though it has been said that a picture paints a thousand words, I like pairing pictures and words; both can still mean different things to different people.

Thank you to the Cardinal for hosting the challenge all these years. It’s been fun! And, thanks to Su Leslie for keeping the challenge going.

Also, these trees in midst of changing colors and changing seasons seem a good match for the daily post weekly photo challenge: transformation

Changing Beauty

Beauty Haiku (Inevitable)

Inevitably
Our impression of beauty
Will change over time

***
The leaves are changing color here. Overall, the colors don’t seem as vibrant this year. People say that is because we have had drier weather. Still, I was struck by the beauty of this fallen leaf, bursting with bright color against the pavement, as I walked through the park on this chilly day. I can hardly believe that October is nearly over. Where has the time gone?

July Lily

Heat Haiku (Composure)

Rise up and stand tall
Against the sweltering heat
Keep cool composure

***
This has been a hot, hot, hot July! It’s hot enough to make tempers flare! So stay cool my friends!!!

***
This flower (tall and proud) popped up overnight despite the heat. I think it is some type of lily. Do you know what kind of flower it is?

Suburb-The Changing Seasons V2 (March 2017)

Woodpecker Pair

Nesting Haiku (Peck)

Peck, peck, each day
Find the spot and peck away
Ready for nesting

***
I have been watching red-bellied woodpeckers pecking the wood in this old tree. It is amazing to see how they have transformed the branch with a perfect circle entry way to the nest. It must go pretty deep, because I have seen the male bird go completely into the branch and then turn to stick his head back out. This was the moment that I actually saw the pair together at their nesting site. I guess this means they have completed the courting ritual and agreed on the nest location. I will be keeping watch for new developments!

Podium

Podium

Podium Haiku (Parked)

Lonely at the top
Parked upon a podium
Solitary view

Here is my second post of the year for Cardinal Guzman’s monthly photo challenge The Changing Seasons. The picture pairs coastal and inland elements. About five hours from the beach, this seagull (along with a small flock) has settled at a local shopping mall parking lot. Parking lot poles have become a part of this ring-billed gull’s natural environment! It still seems strange to see an ocean bird perched on the mall light pole when the shore is so far away. The expanse of gray asphalt must look like the ocean from up above!

Looking up gulls in my bird guide, I learned that the ring-billed gull is actually a widely seen gull found on all bodies of water and it is common to my area in the winter. Most interesting to me, the guide says these birds are often seen loitering around parking lots looking for handouts of food! Smart birds!

This is my first 2017 post for year three of Cardinal Guzman’s photo challenge, The Changing Seasons. You can post a photo gallery (V1) or a single photo (V2) that showcases your view of the month. You can check out his page for the general challenge rules and join right in! His photos are fantastic! Like last year, I am planning to add a haiku along with my V2 photo each month. Even though it has been said that a picture paints a thousand words, I like pairing pictures and words; both can still mean different things to different people.

I enjoy seeing everyone else’s posts. I love seeing your big city scenes. I love seeing your wide open country views. Like me, some of you live in between – the suburbs. That’s cool; I enjoy your perspective, too. I really think it’s the best of both worlds for me.

Looking through my pictures for the month got me thinking. At first, I thought that the picture I selected for this month would have been better if the bird was in the tree instead of on a wire. But then, I realized that this is a suburb bird. The utility wires are as much a part of his life as the tree branches – this is his natural environment!

I am going to start looking for harmony in the pairing of natural and manufactured elements common to my suburban life!

Calendar Year 2016- The Changing Seasons V2 in Review

image

The calendar year is drawing to a close and I am looking forward to 2017. I enjoyed Cardinal Guzman’s Changing Seasons photo challenge again this year, and I’m glad he decided to continue hosting it again next year. There are several ways to participate, you can choose whichever version you like. Here is my 2016 gallery collection.

This year, I mostly did V2 which, for me, was posting a single picture representing the month. Personally, I also chose to add a haiku with each picture because I like the poetic form and picture pairing! If you care to see my full posts, you can click on the changing seasons header at the top of my page.

I wish you all a wonderful and Happy New Year!

December-The Changing Seasons- V2

December

December

December Haiku (White)

Weary but hopeful
December will settle in
Washed in winter white

***
I need to say that I prefer the decorative coating of winter white in this photo to any wintry white mix of precipitation! I am not wishing for, I dare not even say it, s-n-o-w! A mild winter would be fine by me. It seems hard to believe that December is here, and now nearly gone. This month has been tiring, and I am ready for some energizing rest and holiday cheer. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all!
